Chelsea captain Reece James undergoes successful knee surgery

Chelsea captain Reece James has undergone successful knee surgery after missing the club’s last two Premier League matches.

The 26-year-old England international was absent from Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Brentford and their 5-1 victory over Bournemouth as medical assessments were carried out following an injury he sustained during training.

In a statement on Friday, Chelsea confirmed that the assessments showed surgery was necessary.

“Those assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action,” the club said.

Chelsea added that James had already begun his recovery and would receive support from the club’s medical department at Cobham throughout his rehabilitation.

The club did not provide a specific timeframe for his return to action.

Chelsea are currently sixth in the Premier League table ahead of their trip to Everton on Saturday.
